GENERAL IMMIGRATION FAQ

  1. What is a visa?  A visa is the U.S. government’s authorization for someone to come into the country.

  2. Once I have my work visa, do I get a Social Security number?  Yes. You cannot be paid until you have a social security number. It normally takes 2-4 weeks to receive the social security card and number.

  3. What is a green card?  A green card serves as evidence that an individual is a permanent resident of the United States. The card was nicknamed as such because it used to have green stripes on it.

  4. How do I become a U.S. citizen?  If you have obtained permanent residency through your employment, you can apply for citizenship five years after you became a permanent resident. You must prove that you have been in the United States the entire 5 years. If you’ve obtained permanent residency through marriage, you can apply for citizenship after just three years as a permanent resident.

  5. How long does it take to become a permanent resident?  It normally takes between two and five years (sometimes longer) to complete.

  6. Do I need a social security card to study in the US? A Social Security number is not necessary. In fact, your passport will be your principal identification document.

  7. How do I get a student visa? The necessary form is called the I-20 and your school must issue this to you, to enable you to go to the US Consulate to obtain the F-1 student visa. The I-20 is issued only after you have been admitted to the school and financial proof has been made to demonstrate that you will have enough funds for tuition and living expenses for the entire length of your program.
